Lodge L Series 4-Quart Dutch Oven, Apple Green Chipped lid after first use

Competes with Le creuset & No Lead!, (What's this?) I have been looking longingly at enameled cast iron dutch ovens for some time. Thought Le creuset was the only option. At north of $200 for the size I wanted, I could not justify buying one.

Then I saw that Lodge, an American company that makes great cast iron pans, was selling them. This looked interesting! I picked the L Series initially because I liked the more modern shape of it.

When it arrived I noticed the box said "Made in China". At that point, didn't even want to open the box because I was going to send it right back. With all the news reports about lead being found in things from China, I was quite dismayed because I was running under the impression that it was made in America. Nope. Should have studied more.

I fired off an email to the Lodge company asking for assurance that this product was safe. They responded with the following E-mail:

The steps below are taken in an effort to ensure that these items are of
the highest quality possible, and we will continue to monitor all Lodge
    enamel cookware very closely.

    * Representatives from the upper management level of our Company,
as well as some of our Manufacturing experts travel to China several
times a year to inspect the manufacturing facilities and the process
being used to make sure that our cookware is being produced per our
    stringent guidelines.
    * A third party American company located in China has been
enlisted to perform random inspections of the Chinese manufacture's
    facilities and process.
    * We periodically send imported product samples to independent
    labs for analysis.
    * Porcelain enamel is a glass coating, not lead paint, and is used
for a variety of food related purposes, including cookware, pottery and
grills. Porcelain enamel has proven to be safe and attractive coating
    for cookware.

That was enough to satisfy me. Lodge is a good and reputable company.
Not what I expected, but I am pleased, (What's this?) After baking bread a few times and making a cobbler in the product, I can say it performs well. I purchased this item because I was concerned about baking with my Le Creuset dishes in a hot (500 deg F) oven. The ornamental stainless steel handle is surprisingly functional as well as heat resistant. The stainless inserts in the handles are a waste - frankly they look goofy on a cast iron product. I wish they had saved that cost and kept manufacturing in the USA.

That gets to my subtraction of a star. I didn't even think to look for a country of origin on a Lodge product. I was really disappointed when this one turned out to be made in China. Lodge has advertised American manufacturing for years, so I didn't even think to look. Hopefully the paint is safe!

If I need another cast iron vessel, I will buy Le Creuset again and plan on a homemade handle replacement if the polymer one ever burns up.
Very nice, solid construction, (What's this?) I too wanted a Le Creuset but could not justify the cost. This Lodge L-series appears just as robustly constructed as the Le Creuset models.
Chipped lid after first use, (What's this?) This is a really nice pot, but I put the lid in the dish rack after washing it the first time and the enamel chipped where it touched the plastic (at the screw underneath the lid.) I love Lodge and have many of their cast iron pans, but this will probably be the only enamel pot I buy from them.

  • Porcelain enamel eliminates the need to "season" cast iron.Cast iron core for even heating.Superior heat retention. Can be used on stove tops and in ovens. The "L" Series Dutch Oven is not only excellent for cooking, it is also the ideal vessel to serve meals in. Complimenting the stylish porcelain finish is the graceful "L" shaped stainless steel handle on the lid, providing a generous grip and perfect balance when handling while cooking or when cleaning. It can be used on all stove tops and in ovens, including induction, at temperatures below 500 degrees F. Not to be used in the microwave or on outdoor grills / campfires. Where the lid and pot meet, the visible black edge is a matte enamel undercoat more chip resistant than the primary colors. The white enamel cooking surface is FDA approved. Porcelain enamel eliminates the need to "season" cast iron, creating a non reactive surface perfect for all cooking techniques, as well as marinating, refrigerating or freezing. The corrosion resistant No. 304 stainless steel handle remain cool-touch while cooking on stovetop at moderate heat.

Texsport Cast Iron Dutch Oven without Legs - 4 Quart Handle

Handle, (What's this?) This is a nice pot. I had it for about a week now and I've used it twice. The pot took the seasoning well and has no obvious flaws in casting. The problem is the handle. It is way to flimsy for a cast iron dutch oven of this size.

  • Greater heat distribution and retention
  • Easy to clean surface
  • Keeps food warm longer
  • resistant to chipping and warping
  • Long lasting durability

Lodge 3 Quart Dutch Oven with Glass Lid I JUST LOVE IT !!!!

Fantastic Dutch Oven, (What's this?) I was going to buy the 7 quart dutch oven that comes with the 12 inch cast iron lid, but i already purchased the cast iron lid when i bought my lodge 12-inch cast iron skillet. So i was very happy to find this item, the 7 quart dutch oven with GLASS lid. The glass lid fits the dutch oven AND my 12-inch lodge skillet perfectly. And the 12-inch cast iron lodge lid that i already had fits this dutch oven perfectly. It's really nice to be able to use either lid on both items. And, I should mention, that this dutch oven is exactly the same as the other 7 quart lodge dutch oven, it just comes with a different lid, glass instead of cast iron.
I've never had a dutch oven before. I bought this to replace my 8 quart non-stick stockpot. I'm trying to throw out and replace all of my non-stick cookware because it just doesn't last.
So far in this dutch oven I have made chili, salmon, and deep fried buffalo chicken for my husband and me, with a few days worth of leftovers with the chili. Making the salmon was great because the recipe called for cooking on the stovetop first, and then moving the dutch oven to the oven. I'm really glad I went with the 7 quart. I like having leftovers, and when we have people over for a meal... the 5 quart would have been too small.
I really researched to find the best dutch oven. I would have been willing to spend a lot more money, but this dutch oven is rated so well, and the lodge brand is rated so well, and I've been so happy with my other lodge cookware, that I decided on this one.
I JUST LOVE IT !!!!, Just received my order today...and am absolutely thrilled to see it. Its a perfect size that I looked for and the packaging was awesome.

Le Creuset Enameled Cast-Iron 8-Quart Oval French Oven, Cherry Best Dutch Oven on the market

kitchen workhorse, I inherited part of my mother's Le Creuset collection - i have 5 or 6 pieces. These pieces are all from the 50's and 60's, and were used for many years (prior to her stashing them away: I think they got too heavy for her to lift). This particular pot is my favorite, and it was probably one of my mom's favorites too because it is the one that shows the most wear. I use it at least once a week. It is great to put in a large piece of beef, soup, or two smaller chickens and braise them. A round pot seems more useful, but really it's not: this shape is easier to stir stuff to the edges and fit more food (like a brisket, or the aforementioned chickens).

I've got some beautiful stainless cookware, and some regular cast iron skillets, but I really enjoy using the Le Creuset. Sometimes I think I use them because of their fun color, but really I find that the sizes are most convenient, and it's great that they are easy to clean and go from stovetop to oven if needed. Yes, they are heavy, but I look for that in a good pot! If I only got to have one Le Creuset pot, this would be my choice.
TRAIN users, Follow instructions! BE SURE ALL USERS understand "how to handle the enamelware"

In the 1960's my parents scraped up enough money to buy me a fairly complete set of Le Crueset cookware, I had attended the original Culinary Institute of America when it was located in New Haven, Conn. and, we enjoyed entertaining family and friends at home. Needless to say, the cook and serve feature really added to the smooth flow of the meals.
Best Dutch Oven on the market, I guess if you did not care what your pot looked like, you could go with something like Lodge sells, plain uncoated black iron. And there is nothing wrong in that! However, I doubt that anything on the market has the finish and beauty that this product has. Sure it's expensive, but I don't think you will be disappointed in the quality. They are heavy, but the thin cast method that Le Creuset uses keeps the weight to a minimum. After all, it is cast iron.

There are just a couple things that I would like to share.

    1. Don't drop it. It is cast iron, but it probably will break. I had this happen to me about 6 months ago. Dropped it on a tile floor and it split right up the side. What a bummer, but I did buy a new one.

    2. If you fry or brown meats in hot oil, you will notice that the enamel coating on the inside bottom of the pot will loose its shine. This most likely is an appearance issue and would not affect the performance of the product. If you just cook or braise in water, the pot will stay shiny like new. I usually brown my meats in a SS skillet anyway, then transfer to the dutch oven.

    3. Best way to clean stains? Not sure about this but I have been using Bon Ami powdered cleanser. It's pretty good at removing stains from enamel and absolutely will not scratch.

If you make a lot of soups, stews, braise meets, this is a top notch item to have on top of the stove, or in the oven.
Great braiser, (What's this?) I recently got very serious about cooking with French ovens. I have several sizes made by Le Creuset and Staub. I find them equally great. With this model, I ordered a stainless steel knob to replace the stock knob so I don't have to worry about oven temperatures.

Made of heavy-duty cast iron, the cookware's colorful, long-lasting exterior enamel resists chipping and cracking, while its durable, nonreactive sand-colored interior enamel offers a smooth surface for cooking and an optimal palette for food presentation. As cast iron is unexcelled for even heat distribution and superior heat retention, and enamel is impervious to acids and odors, the oven browns and cooks food uniformly and gently without hot spots and can be used for marinating, cooking on the stovetop, or finishing in the oven. Two loop cast-iron side handles help ensure a steady grip during transport--even when wearing bulky oven mitts, and the unit's secure-fitting lid locks in heat and moisture while cooking. The lid also comes fitted with a black phenolic knob that will withstand an oven's heat up to 350 degrees F. Beautiful enough for the table yet durable enough to outlive its lifetime limited warranty, the French oven can be safely used on any stovetop, including induction, and should be hand washed for best results.
