Lodge L Series 4-Quart Dutch Oven, Apple Green Chipped lid after first use

Competes with Le creuset & No Lead!, (What's this?) I have been looking longingly at enameled cast iron dutch ovens for some time. Thought Le creuset was the only option. At north of $200 for the size I wanted, I could not justify buying one.

Then I saw that Lodge, an American company that makes great cast iron pans, was selling them. This looked interesting! I picked the L Series initially because I liked the more modern shape of it.

When it arrived I noticed the box said "Made in China". At that point, didn't even want to open the box because I was going to send it right back. With all the news reports about lead being found in things from China, I was quite dismayed because I was running under the impression that it was made in America. Nope. Should have studied more.

I fired off an email to the Lodge company asking for assurance that this product was safe. They responded with the following E-mail:

The steps below are taken in an effort to ensure that these items are of
the highest quality possible, and we will continue to monitor all Lodge
    enamel cookware very closely.

    * Representatives from the upper management level of our Company,
as well as some of our Manufacturing experts travel to China several
times a year to inspect the manufacturing facilities and the process
being used to make sure that our cookware is being produced per our
    stringent guidelines.
    * A third party American company located in China has been
enlisted to perform random inspections of the Chinese manufacture's
    facilities and process.
    * We periodically send imported product samples to independent
    labs for analysis.
    * Porcelain enamel is a glass coating, not lead paint, and is used
for a variety of food related purposes, including cookware, pottery and
grills. Porcelain enamel has proven to be safe and attractive coating
    for cookware.

That was enough to satisfy me. Lodge is a good and reputable company.
Not what I expected, but I am pleased, (What's this?) After baking bread a few times and making a cobbler in the product, I can say it performs well. I purchased this item because I was concerned about baking with my Le Creuset dishes in a hot (500 deg F) oven. The ornamental stainless steel handle is surprisingly functional as well as heat resistant. The stainless inserts in the handles are a waste - frankly they look goofy on a cast iron product. I wish they had saved that cost and kept manufacturing in the USA.

That gets to my subtraction of a star. I didn't even think to look for a country of origin on a Lodge product. I was really disappointed when this one turned out to be made in China. Lodge has advertised American manufacturing for years, so I didn't even think to look. Hopefully the paint is safe!

If I need another cast iron vessel, I will buy Le Creuset again and plan on a homemade handle replacement if the polymer one ever burns up.
Very nice, solid construction, (What's this?) I too wanted a Le Creuset but could not justify the cost. This Lodge L-series appears just as robustly constructed as the Le Creuset models.
Chipped lid after first use, (What's this?) This is a really nice pot, but I put the lid in the dish rack after washing it the first time and the enamel chipped where it touched the plastic (at the screw underneath the lid.) I love Lodge and have many of their cast iron pans, but this will probably be the only enamel pot I buy from them.

  • Porcelain enamel eliminates the need to "season" cast iron

  • Porcelain enamel eliminates the need to "season" cast iron.Cast iron core for even heating.Superior heat retention. Can be used on stove tops and in ovens. The "L" Series Dutch Oven is not only excellent for cooking, it is also the ideal vessel to serve meals in. Complimenting the stylish porcelain finish is the graceful "L" shaped stainless steel handle on the lid, providing a generous grip and perfect balance when handling while cooking or when cleaning. It can be used on all stove tops and in ovens, including induction, at temperatures below 500 degrees F. Not to be used in the microwave or on outdoor grills / campfires. Where the lid and pot meet, the visible black edge is a matte enamel undercoat more chip resistant than the primary colors. The white enamel cooking surface is FDA approved. Porcelain enamel eliminates the need to "season" cast iron, creating a non reactive surface perfect for all cooking techniques, as well as marinating, refrigerating or freezing. The corrosion resistant No. 304 stainless steel handle remain cool-touch while cooking on stovetop at moderate heat.

Texsport Cast Iron Dutch Oven without Legs - 4 Quart Handle

Handle, (What's this?) This is a nice pot. I had it for about a week now and I've used it twice. The pot took the seasoning well and has no obvious flaws in casting. The problem is the handle. It is way to flimsy for a cast iron dutch oven of this size.

  • Easy to clean surface
  • Keeps food warm longer
  • resistant to chipping and warping

Lodge 3 Quart Dutch Oven with Glass Lid I JUST LOVE IT !!!!

Fantastic Dutch Oven, (What's this?) I was going to buy the 7 quart dutch oven that comes with the 12 inch cast iron lid, but i already purchased the cast iron lid when i bought my lodge 12-inch cast iron skillet. So i was very happy to find this item, the 7 quart dutch oven with GLASS lid. The glass lid fits the dutch oven AND my 12-inch lodge skillet perfectly. And the 12-inch cast iron lodge lid that i already had fits this dutch oven perfectly. It's really nice to be able to use either lid on both items. And, I should mention, that this dutch oven is exactly the same as the other 7 quart lodge dutch oven, it just comes with a different lid, glass instead of cast iron.
I've never had a dutch oven before. I bought this to replace my 8 quart non-stick stockpot. I'm trying to throw out and replace all of my non-stick cookware because it just doesn't last.
So far in this dutch oven I have made chili, salmon, and deep fried buffalo chicken for my husband and me, with a few days worth of leftovers with the chili. Making the salmon was great because the recipe called for cooking on the stovetop first, and then moving the dutch oven to the oven. I'm really glad I went with the 7 quart. I like having leftovers, and when we have people over for a meal... the 5 quart would have been too small.
I really researched to find the best dutch oven. I would have been willing to spend a lot more money, but this dutch oven is rated so well, and the lodge brand is rated so well, and I've been so happy with my other lodge cookware, that I decided on this one.
I JUST LOVE IT !!!!, Just received my order today...and am absolutely thrilled to see it. Its a perfect size that I looked for and the packaging was awesome.

Le Creuset Enameled Cast-Iron 8-Quart Oval French Oven, Cherry Best Dutch Oven on the market

kitchen workhorse, I inherited part of my mother's Le Creuset collection - i have 5 or 6 pieces. These pieces are all from the 50's and 60's, and were used for many years (prior to her stashing them away: I think they got too heavy for her to lift). This particular pot is my favorite, and it was probably one of my mom's favorites too because it is the one that shows the most wear. I use it at least once a week. It is great to put in a large piece of beef, soup, or two smaller chickens and braise them. A round pot seems more useful, but really it's not: this shape is easier to stir stuff to the edges and fit more food (like a brisket, or the aforementioned chickens).

I've got some beautiful stainless cookware, and some regular cast iron skillets, but I really enjoy using the Le Creuset. Sometimes I think I use them because of their fun color, but really I find that the sizes are most convenient, and it's great that they are easy to clean and go from stovetop to oven if needed. Yes, they are heavy, but I look for that in a good pot! If I only got to have one Le Creuset pot, this would be my choice.
TRAIN users, Follow instructions! BE SURE ALL USERS understand "how to handle the enamelware"

In the 1960's my parents scraped up enough money to buy me a fairly complete set of Le Crueset cookware, I had attended the original Culinary Institute of America when it was located in New Haven, Conn. and, we enjoyed entertaining family and friends at home. Needless to say, the cook and serve feature really added to the smooth flow of the meals.
Best Dutch Oven on the market, I guess if you did not care what your pot looked like, you could go with something like Lodge sells, plain uncoated black iron. And there is nothing wrong in that! However, I doubt that anything on the market has the finish and beauty that this product has. Sure it's expensive, but I don't think you will be disappointed in the quality. They are heavy, but the thin cast method that Le Creuset uses keeps the weight to a minimum. After all, it is cast iron.

There are just a couple things that I would like to share.

    1. Don't drop it. It is cast iron, but it probably will break. I had this happen to me about 6 months ago. Dropped it on a tile floor and it split right up the side. What a bummer, but I did buy a new one.

    2. If you fry or brown meats in hot oil, you will notice that the enamel coating on the inside bottom of the pot will loose its shine. This most likely is an appearance issue and would not affect the performance of the product. If you just cook or braise in water, the pot will stay shiny like new. I usually brown my meats in a SS skillet anyway, then transfer to the dutch oven.

    3. Best way to clean stains? Not sure about this but I have been using Bon Ami powdered cleanser. It's pretty good at removing stains from enamel and absolutely will not scratch.

If you make a lot of soups, stews, braise meets, this is a top notch item to have on top of the stove, or in the oven.
Great braiser, (What's this?) I recently got very serious about cooking with French ovens. I have several sizes made by Le Creuset and Staub. I find them equally great. With this model, I ordered a stainless steel knob to replace the stock knob so I don't have to worry about oven temperatures.

Made of heavy-duty cast iron, the cookware's colorful, long-lasting exterior enamel resists chipping and cracking, while its durable, nonreactive sand-colored interior enamel offers a smooth surface for cooking and an optimal palette for food presentation. As cast iron is unexcelled for even heat distribution and superior heat retention, and enamel is impervious to acids and odors, the oven browns and cooks food uniformly and gently without hot spots and can be used for marinating, cooking on the stovetop, or finishing in the oven. Two loop cast-iron side handles help ensure a steady grip during transport--even when wearing bulky oven mitts, and the unit's secure-fitting lid locks in heat and moisture while cooking. The lid also comes fitted with a black phenolic knob that will withstand an oven's heat up to 350 degrees F. Beautiful enough for the table yet durable enough to outlive its lifetime limited warranty, the French oven can be safely used on any stovetop, including induction, and should be hand washed for best results.

The Camp chef UDO-14 Ultimate Dutch Oven. 9 1/2 Quarts,Cast Iron. Get the whole kit

Get the whole kit, The UDO-14 performs as advertised, but a couple issues showed up. I wanted it for pastry and breads as much as for crock-pot meals. With the stand-alone oven, there is still an issue with uneven heat and not getting done on top. One reviewer suggested it still needed briquettes on the lid to bake breads. There is a quick fix for it and I wish I figured it out before I bought the UDO-14 as I would have bought both together. Don't get the UDO without the Dutch Oven Dome Cover. For $30-something you get a deflection plate to spread the heat from the gas burner (no hot spots). It also allows the oven to sit securely on its legs on the top of the gas stove. The cover itself is a fire-proof fabric dome that drops over the oven and keeps the entire pot and lid at pretty much the same temperature. The only minus is I am having trouble finding cookware that has a hole in the center large enough to drop over the convection column in the UDO-14.
One of the best and definitely the most inovative dutch oven on the market, (What's this?) This dutch oven does everything great especially if you are using it on a Camp Chef stove. The cone in the center does a great job at getting your heat to the top of the dutch oven without worrying about coal ash in your food. The lid doubles as a nice deep skillet or trivet. the two removable grates included with it work well for grilling, small smokes, and doing a dish on the bottom with meats on top. Another great product from camp chef. I have done everything from cobblers to pot roast in it and been exceptionally pleased. The only downside if you can call it a downside is that you can not use dutch oven liners with this oven.
    Dutch oven, (What's this?)
Great little oven, I love to cook up my special bean recipe in this little oven. It heats so thoroughly, which really makes the cooking process turn out better. And of course, being cast iron, this thing will last forever.

Lodge Logic 4-Quart Cast-Iron Camp Dutch Oven

Love this dutch oven., (What's this?) Love this dutch oven . Just what we wanted .
Must have, (What's this?) This is one thing everyone needs. I use it camping, but also love this when the power goes out.
Great Dutch Oven, (What's this?) For those who have never cooked in a Dutch oven, it is wonderful. Dutch ovens are the most versatile cookware anywhere. I use mine camping, in back yard cookouts, and even in the kitchen, and have cooked everything from breads and pizza to ribs and casserole to cake and cobbler.

Lodge is the only way to go for Dutch ovens. The finish is better than others I have used making cleanup much easier, and wall thickness is uniform so it cooks evenly. I have several Lodge Dutch ovens and they all perform great.

I also have a cheap Chinese Dutch oven. The advantages of it are that it was cheap, and... hmm... did I mention that it was cheap? I rarely use it because it is so hard to clean. I only grab it if all my Lodges are in use.

You pay more for a Lodge, but if you use your Dutch ovens for anything besides decoration, you will appreciate the quality Lodge delivers.
My hubby loves my cooking with it, When I bought this, I got myself prepared to season it. We got it & surprise, it is already seasoned. That just really made my day as we were getting packed up to go camping. With being a first timer, it took sometime to figure out the temperatures, but I picked it up pretty quick. Now my hubby wants me to use it even when we are home. He almost likes it better than cooking in the house. Guess I'm going to have to get more cookbooks & do some experimenting.
One size does not fit all, (What's this?) Knowing full well that one size was not going to cover all meal plans, I ordered the 2, 4, and 8 qt dutches. I plan to cook all my country meals over (and under) a wood fire, since I have the wood-lot to support it. Cast Iron cooking is my new found interest. The Lodge dutch ovens are well made, free of casting issues, and the Logic Seasoning is a good starting point. The 8 qt will do large meals, and my meatloaf/bread and escargot pans fit right in it. I also purchased some support gear like gloves and a lid lifter (not Lodge), a steel tripod (also not Lodge), the lid stand, and the cast iron trivet. With reasonable care these dutches are going to prepare a lifetime of meals and will probably be handed down to survivers.
Pot, (What's this?) It works great! I would recommend this product to anyone in the world.
We won't camp without this now, (What's this?) We have been thinking about getting a dutch oven for a year or so and after attending a day camp where our boys learned to cook in one, we decided it was time to purchase. We love our dutch oven. We made sure we seasoned it before camping so that our bisquits did not stick. We also made stew which came out delicious.
Lodge Dutch oven, I love this quality cast iron Dutch oven. I have used it over a camp fire as well as in my oven. I use it all the time. It was a good price comparing it to other stores and lodge cast iron cookware is unsurpassed by other companies.
How to Care, Clean and Cook With Cast-Iron cookware, This is the classic Dutch Oven that is used by boy scouts, girl scouts, chuck wagon cooks, and outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds. My review is mostly limited to the outdoor uses of this wonderful classic dutch oven, but I use one at home as well. Measures 10 across by 10 tall with legs and lid by 3-1/2 inches deep inside and hold 4 quarts/1 gallon. This model is about half the size of the "standard" popular #12 or 8 quart dutch oven most commonly used, but there many sizes bigger and smaller. It has the tripod legs and a recessed lid best suited for cooking in coals. But those legs make it harder to use in a conventional oven, you need to maneuver the legs if possible onto your grill rack. They make a legless version with the domed lid for a home oven, and I have used it in a fire as well. On this model, you can even flip this lid over and use it as a skillet in a pinch if you need to in camp. You can do it all with Dutch Ovens - cobblers, stews, beans, roasts, dumplings, you name it. It is the ultimate "one pot" pan.

QUALITY: There is a reason you can find old cast iron pans in antique stores, it lasts forever. I have quite a few pans and stuff inherited from family members and even some garage sale finds. I have found pans rusted and abused to where they would head for the trash bin if they were made of anything else, but you can bring cast iron back with some elbow grease and a re-seasoning or two. While my modern expensive non-stick cookware seems to last no more than a few years before replacement in my kitchen, but this stuff can easily last many decades of daily use. Lodge has a life time warranty! I love to cook with cast iron even at home, it is so durable, but I can take it camping too. Easy to clean up, the only drawback being it is heavy and hard on your wrists as you get older. Cast iron takes a bit longer to heat up, but the heat transfers very evenly without hot spots and it retains its heat for a long time. It can go from stovetop to oven with ease. Do not use it at temperatures higher than 500 degrees, as it can crack. People swear certain foods just taste better in cast iron, and I believe that cast iron only improves with use and proper care instead of wearing out like other pans. My oldest pans attest to that. As for Lodge, there really is a big difference in quality, their current pans are noticeably better than the other brands.

SEASONING FINISH: Seasoning of cast iron cookery does not refer to flavor, but the finish, a kind of glaze on the pan. I love old pans because they have the best seasoning, the older the better. I have inherited many old pans.
Good companion pan, (What's this?) This pan, coupled with the 2 quart, 6 quart and/or 8 quart, and used in a stacked position with the briquettes on lids will cook your entire meal from main course to dessert! A handy addition to my dutch ovens.

Lodge Logic L8DOL3 Pre-Seasoned 5-Quart Dutch Oven with Loop Handles

Cast Iron Dutch Oven, (What's this?) This item is quality construction and was delivered within 4 days of ordering in contrast to the estimated delivery date.
Solid, (What's this?) This is a nice looking, probably indestructible Dutch Oven. It is very heavy but that's what I wanted. It has a nice fitting lid and solid handles. I found no rust on this product as some others experienced. The only con I have is that on my first use it left a slightly black residue in the soup I made. I am pleased with this product overall.
Dutch Oven, (What's this?) Dutch oven came as promised, actually very quickly. It is the same brand they carry at Cracker Barrel but much more reasonably priced. This will last forever. Very well made.
Another gem!, (What's this?) This is my fourth piece from Lodge. Once again, I am very satisfied. Because this one is deep, I had to excercise more care seasoning it vs. my skillets.

These utilitarian, long lasting pieces of cookware will never win any beauty contests. But if you want something that is low cost and cooks very well, but this Dutch oven.

As an added benefit, the cover fits my 10 inch Lodge skillet.

As usual, you have have to take care keeping it dry and well oiled after cooking and cleaning.

My first dish was an awesome broccoli rabe with garlic and Smart Balance butter. This was made on the range top. The next dish was a turkey breast that was seared on the range top, and then braised in the oven with some veggies. It is a very versatile pot.
A quick tip to get you started..., (What's this?) These cast iron pots are the greatest thing in my kitchen. No need to ever buy an expensive teflon-anodized-fancy-whatchamacallit ever again! The best part is that these pots only get better with time!
Even though these pots come pre-seasoned, I've found a trick that I use on my new cast iron pots to get them seasoned to perfection: When you get your new pot, the first thing you should cook with it is some fried chicken. Fill it up about a third of the way with vegetable oil, heat the oil to 350 degrees, and start frying. After dinner, pour out the oil, and wipe out (do NOT wash) the excess oil with a paper towel. Then, just leave the pot as is until the next time you use it. You can put the lid on, but leave it slightly ajar for ventilation. Before the next use, you can rinse it out and clean with a soft bristled brush and water only.
Lodge Dutch Oven, (What's this?) This product is more then I even expected. I ended up getting a smaller one also and love them both. I can't believe how wonderful our meals turn out in them. What was I thinking not getting it earlier. I am also back using my cast iron fry pans...
Solid as cast iron, (What's this?)
Lodge dutch oven, (What's this?) I ordered this & a fry pan, both with lids---LOVE them. I used to have cast iron pans, but got rid of them. I LOVE fried chicken in the fry pan--it's the best----I use a little olive oil, white wheat flour & boneless skinless---the taste brings back childhood memories.

The Camp Chef DO-10-Sacagawea 6 Quart Dutch Oven

Smaller then I thought it would be, The description is a bit vague for my taste. When I got it I was expecting a larger oven. 10 means in diameter and it holds 6 quarts which is on the smaller size for dutch ovens. Good size for cobblers and possibly meats. Good product and nice because it comes with a lid lifter for free. I really like the Commemerative lid which can also be used as a skillet. Nice feature.
Well pleased with the one I got, (What's this?) This product is made in China and sometimes the quality isn't all it could be. The oven I got is a good casting with excellet lid to bottom fit. I was pleasantly surprised and very pleased. I own two other Dutch ovens and two cast iron rosters from Camp Chef (all ordered through Amazon) and I have had good luck with every one of them. All of them are good castings with good lid fits.
Lots of promise but very disappointing quality, (What's this?) I was very excited about this oven - I wanted a 5- or 6-quart camp oven with a griddle-top lid, and this oven seemed like it would be a perfect fit. But then I received it and was pretty disappointed with the build quality.

There are a few large pits (two on the lid and two in the oven). The pre-seasoning also smells pretty bad. I don't know what kind of seasoning process Camp Chef uses but the result smells kind of toxic when heated. Lodge's pre-seasoning might not be the highest quality either but I never remember being worried about whether it was safe to use their products right out of the box. I can't say the same about this oven.

My lid is also of very poor quality. The outer edge has grinder patterns all over it, like it was angle-ground into a circle instead of being cast with a good-quality casting. There was no additional sanding to remove the grinder marks, and as such the edge is uneven and even sharp in a few places. It's a little ridiculous that the lid could be sharp enough to cut me, but there you have it. Because of the lid's sharp angles, it is also brittle and appears to have been chipped during shipping.

The lid also doesn't quite sit flat on my oven. The oven itself is more-or-less ok (although the edges are sharp and need sanding), but the lid has these weird raised crusty areas on its inner lip. I don't know if they're build-up from Camp Chef's seasoning process or if they're burrs from the awful grinding job on the lid edges. Either way they're sharp enough to scrape your fingers on and they also prevent the lid from quite sitting flat.

I think that the oven can be made acceptable if I re-sand the lid and the oven's outer lip and then run the whole thing through a couple of solid rounds of seasoning with an oil that doesn't smell so foul. It's definitely not a product I would buy if I could do it over again.
Sturdy cast-iron for the price, Dutch ovens are a classic and versatile cooking tool that is used by cooks and outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds. There are several companies that still make cast-iron, Lodge, Camp Chef, Stansport, and others. My review is mostly limited to the outdoor uses, but I use one in my home oven as well.
I received this Dutch Oven as part of a set that included skillet, a pot lifter, and a metal box with the same Lewis And Clark Expedition Anniversary logo. That was several years ago, and i have had no problems with it. Like many modern cast iron pieces I have had to re-season the item before I used it. It is an economy brand, so I actually had to season it more than once, but that is common with all brands and the "pre-seasoned" claim does not mean much. This model has a notch in the lid that can be twisted to line up with one on the pan to let steam out or to insert a thermometer, but I have never used that feature. It is sturdy, big and heavy. 6 quarts is the "standard" size used by Boy Scouts in our experience. It is 10 incehes diameter on the bottom, about 4 inches deep, and very heavy. The handle is strong and has not warped on the fire. It has the tripod legs and a recessed lid best suited for cooking in coals. Be aware that those legs make it harder to use in a conventional oven, you need to maneuver the legs if possible into your grill rack. Many cast-iron manufacturers make a legless version with the domed lid for a home oven, and I have used it in a fire as well. On this 3 legged model, you can use the lid as a skillet in a pinch if you need to in camp, just remove it and flip it over. You can do it all with Dutch Ovens - cobblers, stews, beans, roasts, dumplings, you name it. It is the ultimate "one pot" pan.

QUALITY & Durability of cast-iron: There is a reason you can find old cast-iron pans in antique stores, it lasts forever. I have quite a few pans inherited from family members and even some garage sale finds. Most do not have any brand name on them.
Quality Cast Iron great graphics, The Camp Chef DO-10-Sacagawea 6 Quart Dutch Oven

First look: Super black and double seasoned, it used to be just seasoned one time, now it is done twice to insure a full seasoning. This is now called True Seasoned Cast Iron. (the wax and film is gone!)

Quality: no milling marks and the lit fits perfect.

This series of Dutch ovens is great, I have several sizes and styles, the 6 quart is the "most used"

Next is the The Camp Chef DO-5-Mini 3/4 Quart Dutch Oven this one is great for sauces and deserts.

for the big contests and cookouts the The Camp Chef Lewis & Clark 12-Quart Dutch Oven is best.

I am a big fan of cast iron cooking and think the food just tastes way better. My favorite Pan is a Griswold early 1900's model. Much of the "New" cast iron has too much aluminum and doesn't season up well.
