Love this dutch oven., (What's this?) Love this dutch oven . Just what we wanted .
Must have, (What's this?) This is one thing everyone needs. I use it camping, but also love this when the power goes out.
Great Dutch Oven, (What's this?) For those who have never cooked in a Dutch oven, it is wonderful. Dutch ovens are the most versatile cookware anywhere. I use mine camping, in back yard cookouts, and even in the kitchen, and have cooked everything from breads and pizza to ribs and casserole to cake and cobbler.
Lodge is the only way to go for Dutch ovens. The finish is better than others I have used making cleanup much easier, and wall thickness is uniform so it cooks evenly. I have several Lodge Dutch ovens and they all perform great.
I also have a cheap Chinese Dutch oven. The advantages of it are that it was cheap, and... hmm... did I mention that it was cheap? I rarely use it because it is so hard to clean. I only grab it if all my Lodges are in use.
You pay more for a Lodge, but if you use your Dutch ovens for anything besides decoration, you will appreciate the quality Lodge delivers.
My hubby loves my cooking with it, When I bought this, I got myself prepared to season it. We got it & surprise, it is already seasoned. That just really made my day as we were getting packed up to go camping. With being a first timer, it took sometime to figure out the temperatures, but I picked it up pretty quick. Now my hubby wants me to use it even when we are home. He almost likes it better than cooking in the house. Guess I'm going to have to get more cookbooks & do some experimenting.
One size does not fit all, (What's this?) Knowing full well that one size was not going to cover all meal plans, I ordered the 2, 4, and 8 qt dutches. I plan to cook all my country meals over (and under) a wood fire, since I have the wood-lot to support it. Cast Iron cooking is my new found interest. The Lodge dutch ovens are well made, free of casting issues, and the Logic Seasoning is a good starting point. The 8 qt will do large meals, and my meatloaf/bread and escargot pans fit right in it. I also purchased some support gear like gloves and a lid lifter (not Lodge), a steel tripod (also not Lodge), the lid stand, and the cast iron trivet. With reasonable care these dutches are going to prepare a lifetime of meals and will probably be handed down to survivers.
Pot, (What's this?) It works great! I would recommend this product to anyone in the world.
We won't camp without this now, (What's this?) We have been thinking about getting a dutch oven for a year or so and after attending a day camp where our boys learned to cook in one, we decided it was time to purchase. We love our dutch oven. We made sure we seasoned it before camping so that our bisquits did not stick. We also made stew which came out delicious.
Lodge Dutch oven, I love this quality cast iron Dutch oven. I have used it over a camp fire as well as in my oven. I use it all the time. It was a good price comparing it to other stores and lodge cast iron cookware is unsurpassed by other companies.
How to Care, Clean and Cook With Cast-Iron cookware, This is the classic Dutch Oven that is used by boy scouts, girl scouts, chuck wagon cooks, and outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds. My review is mostly limited to the outdoor uses of this wonderful classic dutch oven, but I use one at home as well. Measures 10 across by 10 tall with legs and lid by 3-1/2 inches deep inside and hold 4 quarts/1 gallon. This model is about half the size of the "standard" popular #12 or 8 quart dutch oven most commonly used, but there many sizes bigger and smaller. It has the tripod legs and a recessed lid best suited for cooking in coals. But those legs make it harder to use in a conventional oven, you need to maneuver the legs if possible onto your grill rack. They make a legless version with the domed lid for a home oven, and I have used it in a fire as well. On this model, you can even flip this lid over and use it as a skillet in a pinch if you need to in camp. You can do it all with Dutch Ovens - cobblers, stews, beans, roasts, dumplings, you name it. It is the ultimate "one pot" pan.
QUALITY: There is a reason you can find old cast iron pans in antique stores, it lasts forever. I have quite a few pans and stuff inherited from family members and even some garage sale finds. I have found pans rusted and abused to where they would head for the trash bin if they were made of anything else, but you can bring cast iron back with some elbow grease and a re-seasoning or two. While my modern expensive non-stick cookware seems to last no more than a few years before replacement in my kitchen, but this stuff can easily last many decades of daily use. Lodge has a life time warranty! I love to cook with cast iron even at home, it is so durable, but I can take it camping too. Easy to clean up, the only drawback being it is heavy and hard on your wrists as you get older. Cast iron takes a bit longer to heat up, but the heat transfers very evenly without hot spots and it retains its heat for a long time. It can go from stovetop to oven with ease. Do not use it at temperatures higher than 500 degrees, as it can crack. People swear certain foods just taste better in cast iron, and I believe that cast iron only improves with use and proper care instead of wearing out like other pans. My oldest pans attest to that. As for Lodge, there really is a big difference in quality, their current pans are noticeably better than the other brands.
SEASONING FINISH: Seasoning of cast iron cookery does not refer to flavor, but the finish, a kind of glaze on the pan. I love old pans because they have the best seasoning, the older the better. I have inherited many old pans.
Good companion pan, (What's this?) This pan, coupled with the 2 quart, 6 quart and/or 8 quart, and used in a stacked position with the briquettes on lids will cook your entire meal from main course to dessert! A handy addition to my dutch ovens.
