Company stands behind their product; great pot!, I had this dutch oven for a little over a year and used it frequently. The second year the enamel started flaking off on the bottom in several places. I called the company and with no questions asked, no sales receipt, nothing, they replaced it. (I had to send the old one back to them; they sent the new one and paid the shipping to do so). After re-reading the directions, I suspect that I was using heat that was too high (I have a gas range). I have been preheating the new pot on medium heat before adding any food, and the "food sticking" that I experienced with the first pot (which also leads me to think I was using heat that may have been too high) is not happening and clean up is a breeze. I won't know for at least a year whether the flaking will happen again, but I'll bet not. And if it does, I know that the company will replace it. I absolutely would buy this again, and the Cabernet Red color is more beautiful than the picture shows.
Chipped after only one use, I purchased this item at a retail store. The enamel chipped after only one use, even though we were extremely careful handling it. Either their manufacturing process is flawed or Calphalon makes extremely fragile enamelled cookware.
Great for cooking but enamel chiped after only a week!, First, let me start out by saying I LOVE the way this cooks and that's the only reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 2. I was so excited to receive this as a Christmas gift! I started using it the day after Christmas and handled it with TLC. I washed it by hand (nothing sticks!) and never even put it in the cabinet with the other cookware. I put it on top of my range for use the next day. I noticed a small nick in the enamel by the yoke of the handle on New Year's Day.
I haven't had any trouble with mine, I think the trick with any of these is to never put them down on anything wet or cold, especially not cold metal. I dedicated a bamboo cutting board to mine as a trivet and it's been in and out of the oven and off and on the stove top making pot roasts and various stews since I got it. I suspect that since it's made in China that quality control could be less good than the French alternative, but I've seen minor flaws in those, too. I'd suggest that people buying this should examine it right out of the box and if anything looks odd (blisters in the enamel, crazed spots, chips), send it back.
great dutch oven, poor enamel coating job., I bought this item locally and have used it about four or five times.
it performed very well.
i did not subject it to any kind of abrupt temperature change, i read the FAQ on the Calphalon website for this item before i used it..it was expensive enough i actually read the directions and washed it first, no high heat was used, it has not been used in the oven.
after the first use i noticed small cracks in the enamel all around the logo on one of the handles, after the fourth use there is now a small chip missing and an area of raw cast iron is showing there.
i also noticed slight rust coming through the thinner enamel just at the very top 1/8" of the inside coating, i clean that off with a well used plastic scrubbing pad, the rust returns with each use.
the oven and lid are not enamel coated where they contact each other and these areas will also rust if you use it for storage in the fridge, i did that one time only.
the calphalon website FAQ states that its ok to do this but i would not do it again myself, the rust cleaned off with more scrubbing.
i should be able to return this for an in store credit or exchange.
Great piece, no chips, I haven't had the problems with it chipping as others have. Mine was even bought at an outlet store at about 1/2 off because it couldn't pass visual QC. It's great for pasta sauces and stews.
