very happy husband, (What's this?) I bought this as a Father's Day gift for my husband, and it was a great hit! I was looking for something primarily to use with a propane burner for our neighborhood outdoor fish fry parties, and it's perfect. I was concerned that 8.5 quarts might not be big enough, but it's just right for cooking a large batch of fish (or chicken) without having to waste a lot of oil.
As for concerns in the review, my pot was not cracked, rusted, or damaged in any way. It was not hard to season at all, and the smell wasn't any worse than what frying something indoors does for a day or two. If that's a concern, you can season it outdoors in your covered grill.
I did a little comparison shopping at a local cast iron outlet, and the only thing close was at least $20 more and didn't come with a basket.
My only "complaint" was that the packaging gave away the surprise. I expected it to come in the typical nondescript Amazon box, but it was shipped in the manufacturer's box, which boldly displayed a picture of the package's contents.
The husband and I are very happy with this purchase and would recommend it to anyone.
Difficult to clean, I have to agree with Frank Yee. Extremely difficult to clean. It is coated with wax and I spent 30 minutes scrubbing it with a green "scratchy" pad and dish detergent and still could not get all the wax off - it sticks in all of the pores of the metal. So I put it in the oven at 300 degrees and 1 hour later it still smoking. My kids are complaining about the stinky fog in the house and have gone to the basement to escape. If I knew what I now know I would have purchased an American made product and paid a little extra.
Very Satisfied, (What's this?) I bought this dutch oven for my husband. We have already used it twice to fry chicken. It's the best tasting chicken I've ever had. Everything tastes better when cooked in cast iron. The pot is great and the aluminum basket is very handy. The only thing that could make it better would be is if there was a small spout for pouring the oil back out of it. I would definitely recommend this dutch oven.
Very poor quality, We purchased this as a Christmas present to ourselves. I was too lazy to scrub off the wax and season it for a few months, when I finally did, I noticed a huge crack all down the side of the dutch oven. Now it's scrap, and we are out almost $60. Cast iron, when properly made, will not crack like that just sitting in a cupboard. DO NOT purchase this brand! Go for Lodge Logic cast iron if you want a quality product.
False advertising, This pot was not as described. It was not a Bayou classic. It did not have a lipped lid, no alligator on it. It came with a rounded lid and cheaply made. I returned the pot.
Bayou Classic 7460 8-1/2-Quart Cast-Iron Dutch Oven and Lid with Perforated Aluminum Basket,
-I appreciate the shipping, it was very quick.
-Bayou Classic 7460 8-1/2-Quart Cast-Iron Dutch Oven and Lid with Perforated Aluminum Basket
As you seen the pot in the picture that the lid had crocodile on it which I wanted to get. I sent it back because of the different lid without a crocodile. They sent me the same as the one I sent it back.
Works for Me, (What's this?) It's a great price and serves it's purpose. Seasoning was easy. I just had to do it on a relatively warm day so I could have all my windows open when the oven started smoking. It's been ideal for making breads and one pot meals. I don't know if I'll ever use the basket that came with it but nice to have just in case. Overall, this dutch oven is a good value.
Great for Cooking Fish, (What's this?) This is a solid product and very easy to use. There was some assembly of the basket that needed to take place but it was very easy to do. I would highly recommend this product to anyone.
The Pot does not have an Aligator on it..., (What's this?) My cast iron pot is very plain and cheap looking. There is no alligator on it as shown in the picture.
I would recommend that you purchase a Lodge seasoned cast iron pot instead of this one.
Don't let the price fool you - just as good as Lodge!, (What's this?) What's a camping trip without peach cobbler fresh from a cast iron Dutch oven? Last year when we wanted to take our daughter on her first camping trip, we knew we had to find a cast iron Dutch oven - but the prices were through the roof - especially with shipping included. This one was not only a great price, but with free shipping through Amazon, it was a steal (in fact, I'd guess this has to be one of those items Amazon loses money on bc of the shipping...). The quality is comparable with Lodge and we've got no complaints.
Perforated aluminum basket.Dutch oven lid.8-1/2-Quart cast iron dutch oven.11-1/2-Inch diameter by 5-Inch height.Seasoned cast iron. Made of rugged cast iron, this classic Dutch oven not only slow-bakes traditional camp food such as chicken and dumplings, but thanks to the included aluminum basket can be used to steam clams, boil corn on the cob, or deep-fry fish with everything lifting out easily for draining. The relatively flat cast-iron lid is ringed by a one-inch lip that holds coals for the "oven" effect, and features a loop handle that can be hooked easily by a lid lifter. Because this model is designed without legs, the oven can sit comfortably on a grill or stovetop if desired. The perforated aluminum basket and the Dutch oven each feature a wire handle that stays upright at a 45-degree angle away from the heat, and swings down to the side for compact storage.
