Great Value, Lifelong Investment, (What's this?) I'm an experienced cook, but I'm new to camp dutch oven cooking. I just started this summer(2010). I got my first camp dutch oven on Father's Day. I cook out in my backyard. Dutch oven cooking seems fairly simple and straight forward to me. I've tried about four dishes so far and they all have turned out great. 1000's of recipes on the net. The more you use your dutch oven, the more you learn how many coals to place on the top and bottom, to regulate the desired temperature. I would not own any other brand of dutch oven but Lodge. Lodge is the best and worth it's slightly higher price, over the China imports. Lodge camp dutch ovens are Made in the U.S.A. Think of it as a life long investment. The Lodge dutch ovens will not let you down. If things go bad, it the cook's fault, not the Lodge dutch oven's. I bought the 14" diameter size for cooking dishes for larger gatherings, and for cooking larger roasting chickens that I butterfly to fit the 3 3/4" height of the dutch oven. If your just starting out, the 12" Diameter, 5" Deep, 8 quart is the first size to get. Most dutch oven recipes are for the 12" size dutch ovens. But, because it's so fun, you may end up with 4 or 5 different sizes in a short amount of time. Get a Lodge dutch oven and just start cooking.
I'm a Big Fan of Lodge Cast Iron, (What's this?) I own several Lodge cast iron products, including a tiny skillet that has been passed down through three generations. As long as you take care of it, it will last forever. Even if it starts to rust, you can just scrape the rust off and start over. These products are very long-lasting, practically unbreakable, and will even add iron to your food! The 8-Quart Camp Dutch Oven can be used indoors or out. If I'm in the kitchen, I use my oven to bake ... outside, it's charcoal. It is very heavy, but easy to move around with the handle, and it holds a lot more than it looks like it would. Highly recommended for anyone from beginners to seasoned cast-iron cookers.
Only Lodge, (What's this?) I own three 12 inch Dutch ovens and one 12 inch deep Dutch oven. I've always thought the 12 inch was the perfect size, but I recently decided to try a bigger one. The 14 inch oven is great for larger groups and is really easy to cook with. It is also the first piece of Lodge Logic cookware that I have ever purchased. It was amazing right out of the box! If you are looking for cast iron cookware, DO NOT consider anything but Lodge. Pay the small amount extra and buy ONLY LODGE. You wont reget it.
Love cooking with a dutch oven, Received My Dutch oven in time to take it camping with us in Aug. Cooked Country style spare ribs, Pizza and Biscuits. My wife even made a raspberry cake, YUM<YUM.
